Mingo Extended Learning Center provides Adult Technical Education for residents of Mingo County and the neighboring counties. We, currently offer License Practical Nursing (LPN), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Office, Legal Office, and Accounting Administrative Support. We are a GED testing site and GED tests are scheduled monthly. We also do testing services for the Mingo County Schools when hiring service personnel. The Mingo County Schools Alternative Education and Gifted programs are located in our facility. Phlebotomy, CPR and First Aid training are taught, too. Free hearing screenings are provided for Mingo County students by RESA 2’s audiology coordinator. The Mingo County robotics and Lego teams, which are extra-curricular activities, schedule their construction and practice activities here, too.

The Mission of Mingo Extended Learning Center is to equip students with 21st century workplace skills. Our goals include preparing our students for meeting state and federal standards on the ACT WorkKeys Assessment and the Global 21 skills performance assessment. The assessments are given near the end of the completion of the program concentrations. All our adult programs include clinical experiences, too. These are real work experiences which provide opportunities for our students to gain employment immediately after the completion of their program concentration. We are very thankful to our advisory council members for their help and participation in the use of their health occupational facilities and businesses so that our students can learn and prepare for work and/or college. After our students complete their program concentrations many choose to continue their education and attend college. They are able to take EDGE credit with them. The EDGE credit saves them money for course work they completed here, so that they don’t have to repeat the course(s) in college.

All MELC students participate in student organizations. Our LPN and CAN students are members of Health Occupation of America (HOSA) and our business students are members of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL). The student organizations prepare our students for leadership roles and give them an opportunity to compete at the state and national competitions.

For six consecutive years all of our LPN students passed their State Board’s Nursing Exam. That’s fantastic! Our LPN students have had 100% passage rate. All of them have either entered the workforce or gone on to college to pursue a Registered Nursing degree. Our business students have had 100% placement in the workforce or entered college.

Our business programs have been here since the facility was constructed in 1969. Our LPN program has been here 25 years. We are hoping to add Medical Assisting and Diesel Technology programs soon.

Mingo Extended Learning Center School of Practical Nursing is operated by Mingo County Board of Education as an adult preparatory program sponsored by the Bureau of Vocational Technical and Adult Education.

The program is fully accredited by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Practical Nurses. One class will be admitted annually beginning in August.

Application deadline for each class beginning in August will be May 15 of each year. Each year approximately 25 students are selected to begin an intensive twelve month program to prepare for a career as a practical nurse.
