Business Education

History
Mingo Extended Learning Center’s Business Education Department was organized in January, 1969, as part of the Continuous Education Program of the Mingo County School System. The business programs are on a regular school calendar from August through June (1st and 2nd Semesters).

Mingo’s Business Education programs are structured to enable the conscientious student to pass the West Virginia Civil Service Examination. Requirements for the Civil Service rating are basically the same as the requirements of employers in the Mingo County Community.

A certificate is issued upon the completion of the requirements of the Business Education Programs.

Philosophy of Education
The goal of the Business Education Department is to provide a flexible, proficient, and inexpensive program for adults of all ages who have a high school diploma or equivalent, and who wish to enter or re-enter the business world with marketable skills. The program combines classroom instruction with on-the-job learning experiences that are consistent with student occupational objectives. Students are taught occupational competencies that are needed to acquire and succeed on the job, adjust to the employment environment, and advance in occupations of their choice.

All programs provide students with training in the latest word processing, data processing, and accounting programs: Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Publisher and Outlook), desktop publishing software, medical office software, and an automated accounting program.

Consistent with the philosophy of the Mingo County Board of Education, we strive to provide a quality program of instruction with high standards for academic achievement. All students, regardless of race, sex, religion, marital status, national origin, economic or social status, have the opportunity to reach their maximum potential in acquiring life-long skills. Moreover, the Business Education program shall transmit the attitudes, competencies, and values that help students attain self-sufficiency, positive self-image, and readiness for positive work experiences.

Work Based Clinical Experience
Work based clinical experience opportunities are required with all programs: Medical Office, and Administration & Business Support.

Students complete work based clinical experiences during both semesters in the program. They are placed at various offices around the Tug Valley Community. Full-time students with satisfactory grades and good attendance will participate in the 90 hour cooperative clinical training experience each semester of their individual program. They will attend class part of the day and will work a minimum of 15 hours per week. Also as part of the job placement process, students may be required to submit to the following: fingerprinting, drug tests, credit checks, TB testing, and HIPAA training.

School Hours
Classes are arranged on a daily basis, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Individual class schedules will vary. Classes are arranged on a semester basis. New classes begin in August and January.
School holidays are in compliance with the Mingo County School calendar.
